Slag meaning a female prostitute seems to have first developed much later - around the 1950s - and its more general application to loose girls or women is later still, 1960s probably at soonest. So the notion that slag came directly from the iron and steel industry to the loose woman meaning is rather an over-simplification.

Were it not for the usual sexual asymmetry present in our language and culture, "loose man" would be a reasonable synonym for "womanizer."

Especially insults that could have been directed at men (rather than the usual synonyms for loose or low woman like 'hussy', 'slattern' etc.) I know that words like 'asshole' and 'jerk' are very contemporary in usage, but try as I might, I can't think of any archaic equivalents.

Mar 1, 2020 · "Loose" is a literal translation of the Urdu/Hindi word dheela. It implies imperfect or bad. E.g. kaam dheela kiya hai i.e. "The work has been loosely done" implies that the task was ill-performed. Hindi/Urdu aren't very literal languages. (Personally, it drives me a little insane at times.) "Loose character" means someone with bad moral qualities.
