Colorado now has 29 wolves on the ground, officials said. Those include: 15 from the Canadian province, including eight females and seven males of varying ages.Seven wolves from the initial December 2023 release (three others died).

Officials said the department completed a capture and release Saturday for the second Gray Wolf reintroduction season as part of the Colorado Gray Wolf Restoration and Management Plan. Five wolves from the original Copper Creek Pack were also released Saturday. The department said all of the wolves were released in Eagle and Pitkin Counties.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife said this year should be dramatically different than the first wolf release in the state. They said they have a strong partnership with CDA and NGOs and the new wolves have never been around livestock before.

This week, more wolves were released in Colorado as part of an initiative to reintroduce the species to the state. The gray wolf has been endangered in the United States for many years, and recent poaching and habitat loss have further diminished their numbers.

Fifteen gray wolves from British Columbia and five wolves from the Copper Creek pack were released on private land in Pitkin and Eagle counties in the last week, Colorado Parks and Wildlife announced.
