The Minnesota Wild won’t be returning home empty-handed. They snapped a three-game losing streak by stymieing the high-flying Colorado Avalanche 3-1 on Monday afternoon at Ball Arena to earn a split on their road trip.

DENVER -- Yakov Trenin and Brock Faber scored 1:35 apart in the third period for the Minnesota Wild, who pulled away from the Colorado Avalanche for a 3-1 win at Ball Arena on Monday. Jake Middleton had a goal and an assist, and Liam Ohgren had two assists for the Wild (28-15-4), who had lost three straight games. Marc-Andre Fleury made 26 saves.

With a little over a minute left in the second period, Colorado star Nathan MacKinnon made the Wild look silly when he deked Trenin and tied the game with his 18th goal of the season. It came on just the Avalanche's 11th shot on goal in two periods.

The Minnesota Wild (27-15-4) are back in action tonight for one more game on the road before they return home. They will face the Colorado Avalanche (28-18-1) today for a 2:00 p.m. central time start.

After a bad loss to Nashville on Saturday, the Wild bounced back with a smart, structured game plan against the rival Avalanche.

MacKinnon is the most likely Avalanche player to take advantage of a Wild defense that is bleeding shots. Not only is he the best shot-generator on the team, but the Wild have allowed the second-most shots to centers in the NHL over the past few weeks.

The Wild kept a high-powered Avalanche offense to the outside, for the most part, holding them to 11 shots through two periods. At one point, Colorado had just one shot over a 15 1/2 minute stretch. Minnesota was much better at exiting their own zone.

Mackenzie Blackwood was outstanding and Nathan MacKinnon had a brilliant goal, but it wasn’t enough to get the win.
