President Donald Trump escalated his trade offensive against China on Monday, announcing an amendment to Executive Order 14195 that hikes tariffs on Chinese imports from 10% to 20%, citing Beijing’s failure to curb the flow of fentanyl and other synthetic opioids into the U.

The biggest test of that goal could come from across the Pacific, where Trump is set to double tariffs on Chinese imports to 20%, starting Tuesday. The US president has said Beijing can avert the higher levies by doing more to stem the flow of drugs, particularly fentanyl, into the US.

China is reportedly preparing countermeasures against fresh U.S. import tariffs that are set to take effect on March 4, with American agricultural exports likely to be targeted. “China is studying and formulating relevant countermeasures in response to the U.
