The Dallas Cowboys gave up a fourth-round pick to take a look at Trey Lance. The club is now ready to invest another pick in a young quarterback to develop behind Dak Prescott. Prescott will be the highest-paid player in the NFL this season.

It's not a huge surprise that, after spending the past two seasons as the No. 3 option for a Cowboys bunch that had Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush firmly entrenched ahead of him, Trey Lance now will be on the move.

The Dallas Cowboys already have the team’s franchise quarterback in Dak Prescott, but the front office faces question marks at the position beyond the former Pro Bowler. Both Cooper Rush and Trey Lance are set to hit NFL free agency in the coming weeks.

Dart was one of the best players in college football last season, throwing for 4,279 yards and 29 touchdowns (both top-10 marks in the NCAA). He has shown flashes of good decision-making and accuracy, posting a 69.3% completion percentage for the Rebels in 2024.

Lance, who made his first start for the Cowboys in 2024, is among the most important names to watch this offseason.

In addition to Lance's departure, Cooper Rush, who's played seven seasons in Dallas, is set to be an unrestricted free agent. The Cowboys could look to the free-agent market and try to lure a backup with starting experience such as Justin Fields or Drew Lock to fill the void.

Jones explained why Cooper Rush may not fit in the Cowboys’ 2025 budget and Lance is “probably going to be looking for something different.”
