Amazon is set to release its long-awaited - and delayed - Alexa generative artificial intelligence voice service, said three people familiar with the matter, and has scheduled a press event for later this month to preview it.

Though the updated version of Alexa was originally expected to land in late February, it is now pegged for March 31 or later.

Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) is preparing to launch its highly anticipated Alexa generative artificial intelligence (AI) voice service, according to Reuters, citing three people privy to the matter. The company has arranged a press event later this month to showcase the new service.

The new Alexa will initially be available for a limited number of users for free, Reuters reports, although Amazon has been considering a $5 to $10 monthly fee. The company will reportedly continue to offer what it’s calling “Classic Alexa,” the version of Alexa widely available today, in either case.

Concerns over accuracy lead to another delay for the souped-up virtual assistant — but the launch showcase will still go ahead.
