Veteran third baseman Evan Longoria is officially calling it a career. MLB announced Monday that Longoria is retiring after 16 seasons and will sign a ceremonial one-day contract with the Tampa Bay Rays on June 7 to end his career with the team with which he began.

Now, after making his decision to retire from baseball, Longoria will officially retire as a Tampa Bay Ray. Longoria will sign a one-day contract with the Rays and leave his MLB career on June 7. There will be a special pre-game ceremony featuring Longoria and his family before the Rays play the Miami Marlins at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

After 16 major league seasons, Evan Longoria is officially hanging up his spikes–and doing so where it all began.
