Apple plans to add a live translation to its AirPods via an iOS 19 update coming later this year. As Bloomberg reports, your iPhone would listen to someone speaking in another language and relay the translation to you via your AirPods.

Apple ’s AirPods might soon be able to translate your conversations with other people on the fly, according to a new report. Here’s how it will work: if you're an English speaker and someone starts chatting away in Spanish, your iPhone will quickly translate their words and filter them through your AirPods.

There’s no mention in the report of whether the new feature will be limited to AirPods Pro models, for instance, or will also arrive for the recently updated entry-level earbuds

Now, the GSM Association – the non-profit industry body that represents the world’s mobile network operators – confirms that a multitude of industry partners, including Apple, have collaborated on a new RCS standard that supports end-to-end encryption across multiple platforms.

When Apple released Messages with RCS support in iOS 18 last year, it was missing a key security feature: end-to-end encryption. At the time, Apple said it would wait until encryption was part of the RCS Universal Profile before bringing it to Messages. That day has arrived.
