European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has said she would support US President Donald Trump's initiative for Ukraine if it delivered a lasting peace with security guarantees that included a US backstop.

World leaders gathered to show support for Ukraine with Washington wavering on backing the government in Kyiv.

The European Union is to disburse an aid payment for Ukraine worth €3.5 billion ($3.7 billion) in March rather than later this year, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced in Kiev.
