Republican Gov. Greg Abbott called a special session to redraw districts and gain five seats at the request of President Trump.

In a release on Sunday, Democrats said that they were using the "only tool available to stop this assault on our democracy."

Democratic lawmakers in Texas said on Sunday they were leaving the state to deny Republicans the quorum needed to redraw the state's 38 congressional districts, a move sought to protect the Republicans' narrow U.
